We have been going around in circles to find a diagnosis for my 9 yr old and have finally come to the conclustion that she is RAD. I have been homeschooling her for 2 years with no information about reasoning behind her behaviors. I pray that I will have the courage to continue as I just begin to hearn about her disorder. Thank you for your blog.

How many times do we need to forgive? Day in and day out?? Its like a cheating husband or wife, u never can fully get the trust back. My daughter lies and steals everyday all day long. When is enough enough? When this child r 15 and steal a gun and shot someone, are we going to blame it on RAD?? No, it doesn’t matter! They still need to learn how to function in society.

Thank you for your perspective. I feel similarly as you about therapy for attachment challenged families and I am an Attachment Specialist. It is my recommendation to seek out support from an attachment-based therapist in order to get support for the parents who are the therapeutic change agents in the lives of their children. My job is to give parents as much information from informed experience that I can and teach them how to be healers in their own homes. Sometimes I see a child alone to help them face their own lives, but that is very, very rare. Thank you again for putting your story out there. Best of luck to you and all who have these life changing experiences. Love matters.

One year ago we adopted 3 children, now they are ages 3, 5 and 7. The oldest is a girl with RAD. All were starved as toddlers and sexually abused, and they were also sexually abused in their past Foster Homes up until when we got them. I am at home with them and I do homeschooling to work at bonding and settling them into a life with us.
The boys have responded well and have largely turned around. The girl continually works at sabotage, giving wrong answers on purpose and defying, and trying to molest the boys.
We have led them to the Lord in prayer and understanding of God and who He is as our Creator. She tells us she wants to make the Devil happy… and that’s a sobering thing to hear from a defiant child.
It is beyond exhausting to cope with her. She directly opposes me and blames me for her loss of her Foster Mother. The woman was molesting her, but she was the only mother figure she had after being removed from the bio home.
You say you rely on God and “for discipline I use compassion” but that is not biblical. Would you clarify your dismissal of scripture, especially since you present yourself as based on faith in God? Scripture tells us to spank and addresses rebellion in the heart of a child, and that spanking will drive rebellion from them.
I would also like to know if there are any parents who use biblical discipline and clear black and white rules with a RAD child, and what their outcome has been.

Thank you for this article. As a single parent of a child with RAD (which I have written off as a label since she was diagnosed) I find that noone understands my situation. These RAD behaviors that outsiders either don't see or don't understand make me feel like an outcast. I understand RAD, but at the same time I keep thinking "Why doesn't she just STOP". I want to fix her, to heal her. I want God to heal her. I'm scared for her because of her choices and lack of conscience, and sometimes I feel hatred towards her. So again, thank you for the encouragement and suggestions. It helps to have some direction.

Well, as a child who was abandoned by her parents at age 4 and grew up in a variety of foster homes, I know what RAD is. This is a great article.
